Sharon, who joined us three months ago, has an NVQ Level 3 in Childcare, with special needs as the main module. “I have had plenty of experience with children aged 0–4 and 5–11,” she says, “but none with older children, so I need to gain more experience for future employment. I’ve always loved working with children with special needs and love to see the difference it makes. With Positive Futures, I look forward to every hour I’m needed, and I’d recommend volunteering to anyone undergoing NVQ or other qualification in this field. I’ve gained so many positive experiences from it. All the staff are fabulous and are so helpful.
The feeling is mutual. Tracey McFarland, Project Co–ordinator with our Lakeland Service, says: “Sharon has developed great relationships with the young people we support. Some struggle with new people and can take time to develop a relationship, but Sharon has been very aware of this from the beginning and gives them just the support they need. The young people have responded very well to the way she approaches things. In just three months, she has developed so much in confidence that she has applied to become a staff member with the service. I’m delighted with her experience of volunteering and with the fact that she’s already a fantastic advocate for the organisation.”
