Carers from our Better Futures Project will be taking part in a “Planning for the Future” Mental Health and Learning Disability Conference which will be hosted by the Bamford Monitoring Group on 26 June. Back in 2012/2013, the views and opinions of carers throughout Northern Ireland were sought on the issues, needs and concerns they had around planning for the future of their loved one. Our Better Futures Project facilitated the initial consultation hosted by the Patient Client Council. Subsequently the Project facilitated a large group of carers to attend a follow up workshop held by the South Eastern Trust.
The findings from these workshops will form the basis of information being presented at the conference. The conference takes place at Stormont Pavilion in Belfast and speakers include representatives from the Health & Social Care Board, University of Ulster and Voluntary & Community Organisations. 3 carers from our Better Futures Project will participate in a panel discussion at the event sharing their experiences of having to make future plans for their loved ones with a learning disability.
Earlier this year we published our interim evaluation report of our Better Futures Project at the end of year 1, a copy of which can be found here. This report highlighted that the aims and objectives of the Better Futures Project were “well on the way to being met” and stated how the family carers described the Project as a “lifeline”.
