Celebrating Shared Lives

Posted 02:42PM on Tuesday 17 June 2014

Our Families Matter Shared Lives Service recently joined with Shared Lives Plus to host a family fun day for the families and carers involved in the Service and other “shared lives” carers across Northern Ireland. The event, held at the magnificent Larchfield Estate outside Lisburn, was full of fun and fantastic entertainment despite the pouring rain! Families enjoyed a disco, face painting, balloon modelling and a BBQ. Our thanks go to Tesco Bentrim Road Store in Lisburn who donated £40 towards the event and WJM Building Services, Belfast, who provided funding for the BBQ. We would also like to thank Mooney’s Butchers in Belfast for their support in providing a charity discount.

John Dickinson and Lyn Griffiths from Shared Lives Plus attended the event and enjoyed meeting with the families and carers and hearing their unique stories. We were also delighted that representatives from two other Shared Lives agencies in Northern Ireland attended the event.

Speaking at the event, Service Manager, Liz Palmer said: “We are delighted to be able to take time out of our busy diaries to celebrate the fabulous work that shared lives carers do in Northern Ireland. It’s a real honour to have John and Lyn here today and we look forward to continuing our work with Shared Lives Plus in the future.”

Shared Lives carers open their homes and their families to offer either short term or long term support to people with a learning disability. This offers an alternative to admission to institutional care and allows those who are supported to enjoy ordinary family life within familiar communities.
