IT Makes for Better Monitoring

Effective record keeping and monitoring are important for Positive Futures and the people we support. The problem is that compiling, analysing and using the required information is a slow, labour intensive process.

Good News for Lakeland Families

Until 10th August our Lakeland Families Service in Fermanagh faced closure in a few weeks time. This depressing prospect changed when the Health & Social Care Board announced that funding for the Service would continue until March 2011.

Positive Futures in a Summer First

Positive Futures' staff and volunteers have played a key role in getting a Summer Scheme up and running for the Lisburn Branch of Autism NI.

EXCITING OPPORTUNITY - Volunteer ICT role

Positive Futures is seeking an enthusiastic volunteer IT graduate who is willing to help with the support and maintenance of its IT infrastructure. Reporting to the IT Officer, the volunteer will have responsibilities for the following tasks:

Book your place on our Slieve Donard Walk!

This is our 15th birthday year and we are on the fundraising trail! We are heading for Northern Ireland's highest point with a sponsored walk on Saturday 11 September.

It's £10 to register and we're asking each walker to try to raise at least £50 through sponsorship.

Cool Running!

Last year Noel Curran and Philomena Mullard, who are supported by our Southern Area Housing Support Service, took part in the Newry City Marathon Fun Run with the support of Positive Futures staff and members of the Positive Achievers Group.

Jeffrey Leads the Way

Wednesday 16 June, Half Marathon Night in Lisburn, was a big night for athletes and fun runners. Local MP Jeffrey Donaldson led a large squad from our Lisburn Families Service on the 5K walk and called for local people and businesses to support our work in the Lisburn area.

Lisburn Families' Service Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Our Lisburn Families' Service marked its 10th Anniversary by hosting a celebration event at Trinity Community Centre, Lisburn, on the evening of 3 June, during Volunteer Week.

Jeffrey Donaldson is swapping his MP's suit for a running kit to support Positive Futures' Lisburn Families Service in this year's Lisburn Half Marathon. This Service supports over 60 families in the Lisburn area.

Bulgarian Government Delegation Visits Positive Futures

A nine-strong Bulgarian delegation headed by Valentina Simeonova, Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Policy, visited Positive Futures' Head Office in Bangor on 19 May 2010 as part of a fact-finding trip to Northern Ireland.

Inclusion in Action

The "Hi-Life" Group - six people supported by Positive Futures' Lakeland Supported Living Service - has just completed it's first Participation Programme.

Balloons in a Beetle

Positive Futures' Learning and Development Officer, Victoria Robinson, came up with a novel fundraising idea. Victoria, a keen member of the Northern Beetle & Bus Owners Club, asked club members to guess the number of balloons in a Bug, at a fundraising event at Oxford Island near Lurgan.

Bank on a Burgers and Bands Birthday

Ever wanted to attend a fundraising event that you can literally get your teeth into? If so, Positive Futures has the perfect Bank Holiday event.

We are holding a "Burgers and Bands" fundraising evening as part of our 15th birthday celebrations at the Jamaica Inn, Bangor, on Sunday 30 May at 7pm.

Equality Commission welcomes new rights for people with disabilities

The Equality Commission welcomes the introduction by the Office of First Minister and deputy First Minister of new protection for people with disabilities using transport services.

A First for Adult Placement

Positive Futures' Adult Placement Service is the first in Northern Ireland to receive specialist training from the National Association of Adult Placement Services (NAAPS).

Quality Award for Positive Futures!

Positive Futures has received a bronze award for Excellence as part of the Northern Ireland Quality Award process. This prestigious award is based on a comprehensive assessment of our work and services, using the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence Model.

It's All About Me....for a change!

Women who face the demands of full-time caring don't usually have the time or opportunity to think about themselves. But over the last 8 weeks, a new personal development programme has turned this "fact of life" on its head for 10 female carers from Lisburn.

Sometimes being good just isn't good enough. At least that's what we in Positive Futures believe!

That's why the theme of our Strategic Review Event was "Good Becomes Great When....". This important, successful and enjoyable event was attended by over 100 people, including staff, people we support and their families and other friends and supporters.

Going For Goal In Lisburn

The grassroots strength of the Going for Goal paratnership shone out as IFA volunteers went to work in Lisburn. IFA staff became painters and decorators fora  week, to assist the Brown family in a very practical way.

Drumreagh Supporters Club raise £1500 for Positive Futures

Positive Futures is delighted to acknowledge the great efforts of Drumreagh loyal Northern Ireland Supporters Club members in supporting the "Going for Goal" charities Positive Futures, Mencap and The Prince's Trust via their sponsored walk from Comber to Holywood.

Fundraising with a twist

The Positive Futures fundraising Salsathon, hosted by Salsa NI, was a big hit. A host of novice and experienced dancers came along to the Mandela Hall, Queen’s University, Belfast on 23 June.

Artwork Selected for Belfast Children's Festival

Artwork created by young people from our Bangor Families Service has been selected as an exhibit at the Belfast Children's Festival. Deane Milne (left), Carl Davidson and Aaron Weyl (not in picture) worked with Positive Futures' Support Worker and artist Sarah Majury on a twelve-week programme that used art to explore issues around their identity.

Passing the Student Test

Positive Futures has been highly commended in 2009 University of Ulster Placement Employer of the Year Awards.

Almost 160 organisations from the private, public and voluntary sectors entered the Awards, which recognise and promote excellence in the opportunities employers provide for work placement students.

New Homes Mean New Lives

Thanks to the new Windermere Supported Living Service in Lisburn, 8 long-term patients of Muckamore Abbey Hospital - all with a severe learning disability - have new homes, lives and opportunities.

This is an exciting development.

Curtis Goes for Goal

‘Going for Goal’, the IFA’s charity partnership with local learning disability charity Positive Futures, Mencap and the Prince’s Trust, has brought the dreams of a young Lisburn fan to life.

Challenging Preconceptions and Misconceptions

Young people supported by Positive Futures continue to blaze a trail for people with a learning disability. Fourteen young people from our Lisburn Families Service have gained Duke of Edinburgh Awards at Bronze and Silver level.

Their achievements were recognised at Belfast Activity Centre on Thursday 19th March, when TV personality Pamela Ballantine presented their awards.

It's All About Me

The launch of an innovative and unique personal development programme specifically for women carers of children with a learning disability “It’s All About Me” took place at the Women in Agriculture’s premises on the Tempo Road, Enniskillen on Thursday 12th March. 

Leap for Love: £2,500 raised!

Going over the edge took on a whole new meaning for twenty Valentine’s Day abseilers, who took the ‘Leap of Love’ to support Positive Futures’ work.

Swimming for Positive Futures

Lisburn City Swimmers have been making waves in a week of sponsored swimming to raise funds for their club and local learning disability charity Positive Futures. Their sponsored swim week, which took place from 10-16 November 2008 at Lisburn Leisureplex, was a truly inclusive event involving almost 800 swimmers.

Adam's Big Night At Windsor

Young Northern Ireland fan Adam Maul from Bangor, who has been supported by Positive Futures’ Bangor Families Service for four years, had the night of his life when NI faced San Marino in last week’s big World Cup qualifying game.

"Lifelines" Launched

Positive Futures has published ‘Lifelines’, a three-year evaluation of our Families Services.

The report, by Dr. Lesley-Ann Black, was launched at the Millennium Forum in Derry on Wednesday 8 October 2008 where Patricia Lewsley, the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, was the main speaker.

An Inspirational Woman

Positive Futures’ Catherine Coffey has earned Newtownards Borough Council’s Inspirational Woman Award.

Catherine, who is Deputy Service Manager of our Portavogie Supported Living Service, was one of four ‘Women of Achievement’ who received awards from Dr Janet Gray MBE, who has won the Disabled World Water-skiing Championship on four occasions.

A Voluntary Sector First

Business in the Community has helped Positive Futures to join forces with the NIO New Business Unit in a voluntary sector ‘first’.

Positive Futures Kicks Off In Style

IFA ‘Going for Goal’ charity Positive Futures hit the ground running with its first IFA-related fundraising venture.

The local learning charity organised an "in-house" raffle aimed primarily at Positive Futures’ employees and their families and friends.

Young Northern Ireland fan Myles Connery, who is supported by Positive Futures’ Lisburn Families Service, had the night of his life when NI faced the Czech Republic in September’s big World Cup qualifying game.

Positive Futures becomes one of the Official IFA Charity Partners

The Irish Football Association has announced its ‘Going for Goal’ official charity partners for the next two years. Three charities with a strong reputation for ‘grassroots’ work with disadvantaged and vulnerable people in all communities across Northern Ireland will partner the IFA during the 2010 World Cup Campaign.

Our very own Gillian Wimpress opens new Tesco store!

The outstanding work of a volunteer with Positive Futures, the local charity for people with a learning disability, has been recognised in a novel and special way by Tesco.

Gillian Wimpress was selected by Tesco to open their new store at Springhill, Bangor on Monday 21st April 2008.

Lisburn Service visit NICCY

Parents, children and young people supported by Positive Futures Lisburn Families Service visited Patricia Lewsley, the NI Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY), to give her their views on ‘Try Living in Our World’, a major NICCY report on services for children and young people with Asperger’s Syndrome.
