A Day in the Life of a Family Worker

My day consists of a varitey of tasks from co-ordinating staff for activities, visiting families we support and paperwork, to actually taking part in after school activities myself. My role as a family worker is very enjoyable and varies widely from day to day. The most satisfying aspect of my job is the knowledge that I am providing a service which not only benefits the child with a learning disability but also parents and siblings through respite, courses or sibling workshops.

I am constantly amazed at the progress the children are making through attending activities or courses with us, whether this is changes in socialisation, behaviours or progress in certain activities. In conjunction to this, feedback from  the families gives me great satisfaction in knowing that we are greatly appreciated for the work we do and it is always nice to hear that we are "little angels". Not only is it nice to know what we are giving something of great benefit to our families, but because our children are such characters we also get something back from them....when we are having a bad day they are  the people who can really lift our spirits without even realizing it!
